Farnley Wood Beck Flood Alleviation Scheme

Find out how we’re lowering the risk of flooding from Farnley Wood Beck to properties around Churwell with our Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS)

Why Farnley Wood Beck needs flood protectionFarnley Wood Beck

[redundant culvert structure upstream of Elland Road]

Leeds City Council has secured funding to carry out a flood risk study and to deliver a flood alleviation scheme to address property flooding from Farnley Wood Beck. This beck has caused major flooding in the past, particularly in 2005. There is also frequent flooding of the highway in this area.

Our plans to reduce the risk of flooding

Our investigation into potential solutions has identified that flood risk to Old Close from Farnley Wood Beck can be reduced significantly by removing the redundant culvert structure upstream of Elland Road to increase the capacity of the beck. In addition, we will be improving road drainage and conducting vegetation management along the channel to reduce the risk of woody debris causing blockages downstream.

Updates on our progress

Construction will begin on Monday 26th September 2022 and is expected to continue until early 2023, subject to weather conditions. Our contractors BMMjv will be on site between the hours of 08:00-18:00, Monday to Friday.

To allow the work to take place there will be temporary traffic management on Elland Road. This will consist of a single lane closure that will be in place outside of peak hours.
